Photographer's Note

Gunung Agung is one of several active volcanoes on the island of Bali. Taken from the Bali to Lombok vehicular ferry, near the coastal town of Padangbai. It last erupted in 1963, when lava reached the east coast. 'Gunung' is an Indonesian word for 'mountain'.

Hi Chris, superb, you cleverly took advantage of your POV on the ferry; we can imagine how the top of the volcano blew up and now it looks very serene between sea and sky, good sharpness esp. in the volcano slope, although probably a bit too much for the green hills by the sea; thanks for sharing! I like volcanoes. Althrough the lack of sharpess due to the scan, its very interesting and I like the deap blue of the sea as foreground

Wow.. very nice landscape here. The volcano in the BG dominates the view. Very attractive mix of colours. Maybe the image is a bit oversharpened, but that's probably due to the scan.

Hi Chris - wonderful mix of soft and sharp, of water and volcano, I hope to go there in thge next couple of years, some snow on top would be even better but I know that is just NEVER going to happen.

Hi Chris. A gorgeous mix of blues and greens with a little white cloud for variety:) The shape of a volcano always seems to be pleasing to the eye and this is no exception. Nice ratio of sky, land and sea too.

Very impressive shot of this also impressive volcano. The colors are somewhat washout but I think it's because the age of this photo and the scanning I supose. Excellent lighting and very fine reach colors. Great shot.

Hi Chris,
Despite the loss of quality due to the scan, I think this is a good photo. Gunung Agung really stands out here and seems to occupy the whole island in the background. I sailed to Lombok from Padangbai two years ago, but unfortunately the weather was cloudy and we didn't have the chance to see such a view.

Hi Chris. I'd be interested in knowing how tall that thing is if you know that. That looks like a very menacing volcano. I don't think I would sharpen it anymore. Nice shot Chris.

That's a very imposing looking volcano - it's a good thing it's not active! I like the blue/green tone of the photo, which has an unusual kind of shine to it. Very nicely done!

Hello Chris,

Tropical jungle and volcanoes :
being formed by more 17 000 islands, Indonesia is located at the junction of major tectonic plates : Australian, Eurasian and Pacific.
Indonesia has more active volcanoes than any other country.
Volcanoes like Krakatau, Tambora, Merapi, Toba, Semeru ( and others ..) may have terrific returns to activity - sometimes, on a world scale.
