Photographer's Note
As a result of increased population, shifting cultivation, fuelwood extraction and other human activities, the dry zone in Myanmar now expands in an area of about 55,000 square kilometers situated in the lower Sagaing, Mandalay and Magway Division. About 34% of the Myanmar population is living there. When traversing this region one could hardly believe being in south-east asia, more well known for its green rice fields than for its dusty arid areas. Water is very scarce and people are spending a big part of their time and energy looking for water where they can find it. Some make kilometers by foot or with bullock carts rising clouds of dust to fill recipients at the closest well.
Here at a well, just near Bagan. I already posted another picture at the same place earlier.
Note - Many comments suggest a less centered composition with the cattle more to the left. I cannot agree more. Unfortunately this road was bordered with trees which were breaking the nice dusty and golden atmosphere that I wanted to focus on. If I had moved the cattle more to the right, I would have cut the people visible in the dust in the background...

Bonsoir Vincent!
Thanks for showing this good shot from Bagan.I Tried the same with an oxcart but did not manage as well as you did.
Good sharpness at the oxcart( is it one with 4 oxes ore are there 2?)And the dust shows the typical atmoshphere when there is traffic at Bagan`s sandy tracks.Good light at the trees and nice silhouettes in the background.
Have a nice weekend,
regards,Leo

Hi Vincent, this is a great shot of transportation people used in Asia. Cambodia too, if you had a chance to travel to rural area. Very nice focus and sharpness. The dust behind made this photo rich in its quality. Nicely done. Sothy

Bonsoir Vincent,
What it lacks in "beauty" is largely compesated by the documental value. Very nice light. All that floating dust enhances the sense of dryness, a real surprise for me, as I had the idea that all that part of the world was rather wet and green, except for the plateaus of North Thailand and Laos (?).

Great photo! I too thought the area was lush and green... Anyway, it's a fantastic post for the information you have shared with us and the strong image to accompany it. One hets a sense that it is a hard, hot day. The animals are very beautiful, too. Thanks!

salut vincent,
i like the photos taken with a zoom which "flatten" the third dimension compressing the scene to one layer...effect - intesnifying the cloud of sand...
i'd maybe go for a less central composition but still i do like this image a lot...

I did not know that Myanmar has water problems. I was told that the rainy season is very wet. That road to Bagan is from where? Is it easy to travel by road? I am thinking from Sittwe to Bagan and Mandalay. Your picture shows very well how this country stopped many years ago. Very nice colours and a great POV. Well done.

Hi Vincent,
These unmetalled roads may not be the best ones for the travellers but they never fail to provide the avid photographers with excellent photo opportunities. I had just critqued one of Leo's photos also from Myanmar with a very similar perspective, I guess you know which one. Splendid work!

Hi Vincent,
You caught this one at the decisive moment, and the dust not only enhances the scene but speaks to the issue of water supply and long distance travel referenced in your fine note. I like the background trees here, as well as the apparition like figures seen in the dust. Very well captured, Vincent.

Hi Vincent
Lovely documentary of daily life, and I've not seen interesting transports like this before. That boy behind the mist makes the composition even stronger. I think perhaps you could crop the left slightly, so to bring the oxen transport off-center and the person behind mist more into the frame, but it works fine as it is now. TFS!

La poussière conjuguée avec la lumière donne un superbe effet. C'est toujours étonnant pour moi de voir un char tiré par des boeufs. Superbe la sihouette qui se dessine derrière le char dans la poussière

Hi Vincz,
It's possible to feel the dust, I like a lot the blurred people in the background, like shadows. It's a great sign of the real life. The main character, the chariot, the cows and the people are amazing too, great sharp, interesting subjetc of dayli life and hard works, for take some so useful and necessary like water! Truly amazing. Thanks,

This is great Vincent, and the light shining through the dust kicked up by the hooves of the oxen gives this a wonderful atmosphere.
I'm not sure about the central placement of the ox cart though, maybe this would have worked better with it positioned further to the left of the frame.
It's a great shot though, well done.

Hello, Vincent--
Nice work on this one, the atmosphere is really great, and the dust emphasizes your point about the dryness. i think that this one would have been better if you had taken it more to the right, pulling the cattle all the way out to the left and showing more of the distance behind. This would give a stronger impression of distance travel and emphasize the depth at right.
Thanks!

Hi Vincent, a strong daily life scene captured very well; excellent exposure, esp. in the area with shadows, that looks excellent and we clearly see the details. The centered compo doesn't bother me, on the contrary, there's a subtle partial symmetry due to the oxes, which I find appealing. Regards, Daniel

This is superb Vincent! I agree with you that to lose the people on the left would spoil this image and lose much of the atmosphere. Rules are made to be broken and this time it is right to break the rules. I love the way the cattle and cart seem to be emerging from their dust cloud. Excellent!

This is a wonderful image, Vincent, that captures the dry and dusty atmosphere of this region very well. Excellent focus and DOF. You could have got around the centering issue that a few have mentioned by cropping a little from the left and bottom, but then we would not have seen so much of the dirt road which is an integral part of this image. Hello Vincent,
this is a very dynamic scene! Interesting, good composition. Actually, I do not mind a centered composition (which, maybe, is against photo rules :))
Excellent contrast between the cart and the "glowing" clouds of dust behind it! the people in the BG look like phantoms appearing out of nowhere... or disappearing?
