Photographer's Note

I hesitate to upload this photo because I can pick it apart myself... boring foreground, not much variety of colour, no real subject apart from the mountains themselves... anyway, I decided to share it because it shows a sight that is burned forever in my memory... the first glimpse of Kala Pattar, the ultimate goal of every Everest trekker.

The beautifully symmetrical white peak in the background is Pumori, or Pumo Ri (7145m), which means 'unmarried daughter', so named by George Mallory for his young daughter, Clare. Half way down the frame and slightly to the right you can see the black peak of Kala Pattar, or Black Rock, given away by the faint trails which can be seen winding their way up to its summit. The ascent of the 5545m peak, the summit of which is composed of large, scattered blocks and decked in prayer flags, is rewarded with the famous, classic, unforgettable view of Everest and surrounding peaks which make all the toil and pain of the climb up from Jiri or Lukla worthwhile.
