Small church (in orthodox tradition "skete") near St Yuriy monastery. Its name Perynsky skete.
In year 988, when started the christianisation of Russia, old pagan sanctuaries was destroyed and christian churches erected on its places. Near Novgorod was a sanctuary of ancient god of thunder Perun, and in year 995 on its place was built wooden church. In year 1226 small stone church was built here.
In 1951 archeologists found here the remains of ancient pagan sanctuary, and very close to the place foundations of town Slovensk was excavated, that was before Novgorod, that mean very old one. In short words, surroundings of Peryn skete is one of the oldest inhabited places in North-West of Russia.

thanks for posting. Especially the interesting note. I am working on a project about the christianisation of Russia, the way wich the church dealt with paganism, and how it defined itself in the contrast of it. In fact very similar to the christianisation of Denmark. We also have many churches wich are located on ancient cult places, holy springs and near pagan burial mounds. for the picture... better weather would have helped.
