It was very cold when I was in the square, anyway there was many people on it, but it is so large you can think it was empty.
This is the most famous Russian building, Saint Basil Cathedral. It was built between 1555 and 1561 after Ivan, the Terrible, have conquered Kazan and Astrakan cities. The original church was named because the Trinity and had eight churches inside but a local saint named Basil, was buried in a chapel and the whole church got his name because this chapel was the only with heater, what made it most popular. The church was created as a divine bonfire and it worked as an allegory of Celestial Jerusalem.
Like in many other churches of the town, it was looted and used as a stable by the soldiers of Napoleon in 1812, it is told Napoleon wanted to blow up the church, but the explosion failed.
When the Bolcheviques took the power in 1917 they had a project to demolish the church and it was an obstacle for the gigantic plans of Stalin to the Red Square, where it was blocking the parade of the troops. It is told an architect produced a model of the Red Square where the cathedral could be removed to show Stalin "How nice the square would be without it" when he did that Stalin said: -- Lazar, put it back!
Nowadays the church can be used by the religion in some events, but it is a museum yet.
