Photographer's Note

This is Christ the Saviour Cathedral.
When the Russian empire defeated Napoleon it was build a very big cathedral to celebrate and to thank the victory. After many delays and swap of projects the works begun in 1839 and were finished in 1883.
After 1917 the communists begun to persecute the religion and when Stalin was the president of Soviet Union he wanted to build a giant skyscraper in that place with his huge statue in the top and ordered the explosion of the church in 1931. Some of marble adornments were sent to a museum and part of the marble was used in subway. The tower dreamed by Stalin never was built and the area became a giant pool. After the end of Soviet Union the church was rebuilt (from 1992 to 2000), but while the original was whole made of marble, this one is made of concrete covered with marble.
Everything you see there is brand new.
Here we can see one of the bronze doors. Pay attention in the angels above, the original ones are preserved in a museum, but it would take many time to sculpt them in marble and because this they decided to do them in bronze. There are many doors around and each one is different, many of them with historic personages linked with the religion in Russia.

Quando do fim da Uni緌 Sovi彋ica a igreja come蔞u a ser reconstru獮a e as obras duraram de 1992 at 2000, por幦, enquanto a original era toda feita de m嫫more, a moderna feita de concreto revestido de m嫫more.
