Photographer's Note

Karen woman sitting at her door

The Karen people are an ethnic group living mainly in Burma, but also in Thailand where they are the largest of the major tribes of northern Thailand. There would be as many as 280k Karens living in Thailand, most of them in the provinces of Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Karen women are renowned for their skill in weaving and each of the many sections of this ethnic group has its own style of dress. Generally, unmarried girls wear loose white v-neck blouses and married women wear blouses and skirts in bold colours, predominantly blue and red.

This photo was taken in a Karen village in the vicinity of Soppong, roughly midway between Pai and Mae Hong Son. While waiting for the heavy rain to stop, we had a look at what the girls of the family had to sell (and bought a couple of things) and then we were offered tea and mango. We thank them for their hospitality.
