Photographer's Note

I looked at the Luciano pictures from Khiva (on FB) and I saw him on the pink steps leading to the minaret. I asked if he climbed it. Luciano said: No. And why? I climbed it .
It's possible to climb this 57m tall minaret, Uzbekistan's highest, for fine views over the old city. Morning light offers the best views. With bands of turquoise and red tiling, it looks rather like an uncommonly lovely lighthouse.
But I must say that it was hard to climb. The steps are very high, it is very narrow inside and dark, I had no light. I climbed on all fours and then I saw that other people also climbed this way. Going down was also difficult. But I managed to do it! I was rewarded with fantastic views of the domes of Khiva. The green dome belongs to the Pahlavan Mahmud (1247-1326) Mausoleum.

I think that after such an effort I deserve the smileys. :).
