2008 Archive Ghent “Donkersteeg”
You look between two large buildings on the narrow street "De Donkersteeg"
Narrowly curved street that opens onto the Koornmarkt where the medieval grain market took place. The old French name "rue du Paradis" would be borrowed from the inn "Het Hemelrijck" or Hotel du Paradis, the current number 2. Although this street contains mainly old cores, which would even rise to the 11th century, the current street scene determined by plastered and whitewashed gables from the first half of the 19th century with staggered cornices. Now a picturesque shopping street. The access to a dead-end alley with dilapidated houses and rear houses, called the Paradijszak, is formed by a very weathered gate of about 1500 (between number 22 and 24). Plastered brick construction with sandstone tudor arch on the side, completely weathered water table and probably also enriched with cartouche; right closed by means of donkey's back with leipers and brick.
I hope you enjoy

Hi John,
The presence of the people is animating the scene. The point of view is showing the details of the buildings. The light is giving good colors output. Have a nice day.

Hi John
its funny to see the woman all by herself walking the dog. Its like she has the entire town to herself haha. I like the point of view too, its looking like you took the photo from sitting on the street. smart lighting and exposure, wonderful view of the city

Hi John
An enticing capture that you have included most of the prominent buildings so well fitting the frame. The blissful pastel colour and contrasting blue sky turns this to an evocative imagery enriched by human input. Lovely short, Congrats.

Hi John
Even in 2008 you couldn't avoid an international hotel chain photo bombing a good photo of a charming setting.

Hello John,
What a fascinating and informative note you have written about this place and its history - and a beautiful photograph to accompany it!
It is obvious that on this particular lovely afternoon most people were relaxing, eating and drinking, outside a restaurant on the left while only a very few are actually walking along the streets.
The buildings are beautiful, caught in fine afternoon light in this fine composition and the colourfully dressed visitors add to the appeal.
As always, a photograph of superb technical quality with perfect colours and exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.
Beautiful!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hello John,
A sharp contrast between the modern Novotel on the right and the infinitely more attractive buildings on the left. I like the light and shadow contrasts and the animated atmosphere, both of which contribute to the mood of the composition. Very well realised with excellent colours and clarity.

Bonjour, cher ami John,

Vele groeten, Paul

Hallo John,
Good sharpness, & the bg red roof contrasts well with the blue sky. Nice to see Novotel using and revamping existing buildings rather than erecting a 20 story high-rise. Tfs.

Ciao John
Buon we

Hello John,
Excellent light and shadows cast in contrast, with the view into the narrow street from the larger square.
The architecture styled elegant facades, only the NOVOTEL sign giving a modern touch.
Fine outcome, enliven by the people in the outdoor cafe' and on the old-paved alley.
Good afternoon,
Ike

Hi John,
I work for a customer from Ghent at the moment. I had a chance to meet with them yesterday but we have met in Amsterdam since it was more convenient for both sides.
So I told them that I have never been to Ghent and yet I know this town very well from your photos :)
This is yet another charming street corner with elegant architecture and certainly great place to have a walk. People enjoy coffee in the restaurant as well...
Pleasant light with side light.
Beautiful capture,
M
