Photographer's Note
2006 July a very warm month, I brought a visit at different cemeteries around Ypres in Belgium. A region out of the WAR I, maybe better the GREAT WAR.
British soldiers and Germans soldiers are here be buried on different cemeteries.
Have a nice weekend - Bon week-end.
History of Ypres see Wikipedia the free enceclopedia.
World War I
Ypres was a key position during World War I because it stood in the path of Germany's planned sweep across the rest of Belgium and into France from the North. The German army formed a salient around the city, bombarding it from nearly all sides throughout much of the war. To counterattack, British, French and allied forces made costly advances from the town of Ypres into the German lines on the surrounding hills.
In the First Battle of Ypres (October 31 to November 22, 1914) the British captured the town from the Germans. In the Second Battle of Ypres (April 22 to May 25, 1915) the Germans used poison gas for the first time on the Western Front (they had used it earlier at the Battle of Bolimow on January 1, 1915) and captured high ground east of the town. The first gas attack occurred against Canadian soldiers and also against a force of mostly colonial soldiers from French Africa. The gas used was Chlorine gas. Mustard gas, also called Yperite from the name of this city, was also used for the first time near Ypres in the autumn of 1917.

Hello Emma,

Hi Emma,
Very interesting cemetary. I like how the gate is centered in your picture. The entire picture seems nicely orderly and balanced, maybe this is why the posts and tall grass on the left side bothers me a bit, but I'm not sure if there is anything you could do about it...

Blanka

Hallo Emma,

Groeten Gerrit

Your style of critiquing is so original,I like it, but I am unable to copy it. This is a very sharp and well made picture, carefully composed and well exposed. I note that all the important lines, the wall of the gate, the tree, the graves, and the fence posts etc are horizontal or vertical, that is, parallel with the borders of the frame. This creates a very static rather than a dynamic effect, which seems just right for this serious, weighty subject. I could have wished for just one person, to give it human interest and scale, but, then again, the lack of a human presence adds to the sadness and loneliness of the place. The note is very interesting.

Hello again, Emma. I love the way you have centered the arched portal and the cross can be seen beyond. The tree on the right and the wall and flowers on the left give it good balance. Well seen AND captured!! All the best!
