History:
In the 10th century Bruges was in direct connection with the Zwin and the North Sea
The narrow waterway (DE REIEN) , a waterway that the largest ships of that time (up to 20 tons!) to handle.
The Zwin began However, to get bogged down. This meant that the locals obliged to dig a canal to Sluis Nl
Lock the way to the sea open. But that channel slibde slowly but surely
close as. In 1482 it was no longer navigable and was used only for contaminated
Until in 1810 Napoleon tried to create a new channel
to dig through Breskens - Sluis. Upon his defeat at Waterloo in 1815 it was ready to Hoeke.
The excavations were resumed later under Dutch rule until the independence of Belgium.
