Triennial Bruges 2018: Liquid City

John Powers
New York based artist John Powers (1970, Chicago, USA) studied with Tom Jay, Pacific Northwest, the Pratt Institute and Hunter College. He usually constructs his images from modules that he repeats endlessly. Powers' constructions have already been exhibited at the MoMA Museum of Modern Art, The Kohler Arts Center, The Black & White Gallery and the Brooklyn Museum. In addition, he writes contributions for various online art sites such as Star Wars Modern, Hyperallergic and Triple Canopy.
Lanchals
For Lanchals John Powers has been inspired by the rich history and folklore of Bruges. He acquired the legend of Pieter Lanchals, a councillor of Archduke Maximilian of Austria who was killed in the 15th century during a civic revolt around city privileges. The Bruggelingen had tortured and beheaded several prominent figures from Maximilian entourage, including Pieter Lanchals. The archduke sun on revenge and surrounded himself with an army of soldiers to plunder the city. Bruges eventually regained a number of privileges, but - as the legend wishes - as a reminder of what happened, the city had to live 52 long necks on the canals. White swans still determine the cityscape today. For Triënnale Brugge, Powers is building a square sculpture in the shape of a gooseneck on a small square at the edge of the water, although it can also be reminiscent of a spine or a tornado. Each black building block of the installation is the same module, an equivalent piece of the whole, with one resting on the other and reaching towards the sky.
I hope you can enjoy.

Hallo John,
Een heel aantrekkelijk stadsgezicht, heel mooi van compositie met de brugleuning die ook mooi de foto in loopt. Het kunstwerk staat mooi in het midden, net naast de kerktoren. De kleuren van aangenaam en zomers.

Hello John,
Another topclass entry in your gallery.
Taken with very good pov and ligth management as well as perfect sharpness.
This -quite modern- artwork creates a nice contrast with the classical architecture, surrounding it.
Many usefull notes as well.

Hi John,
The length of the canal is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the details of the houses, of the bell tower and of the artwork. The light is making the colours to stand out. Have a nice day.

Ciao John
Saluti

Hello,
Nice POV of the iron structure. To me, it looks more like an unfinished construction but it fits perfectly in the scene.

Hello John,
This modern installation makes an unexpected but attractive appearance in the traditional environment of Bruges. Its rusty colour blends well with the surrounding brick roofs and the curving lines fit the curving street and canal very nicely. You placed yourself perfectly at a spot from where we see the sculpture very close to the church tower, but not covering the spire. It's very elegantly done.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello John,
The artwork is no doubt impressive, but I find it somewhat out of place in this location; just my personal opinion. As to the composition, this is excellent. Very nicely balanced and with agreeable lights and colours. The people on either side of the canal animate the scene and give the composition scale.

Hello John,
This is an unexpected sculpture in the heart of Bruges. It does look tall and elegant, like the curved neck of the swan; maybe I would have preferred it to be white!
AS always, your photograph is crystal clear and shows a fine sense of composition. The curved line of the canal and railings makes a most graceful guide into the scene, where ancient buildings of warm colours attract our attention, along with the previously mentioned sculpture.
The weather looks to have been as warm and bright as it has been in England for several months.
Have a lovely day,
Bev :-)

Hallo John,
I like the sweeping blue cure of the horizontal canal contrasting with the equally sweeping curves of the rust red sculpture rising vertically on the opposite bank. Good framing so as not to obscure the bg steeple. Tfs!

Hello John,
The iron-net statue stand contrast to its surrounding, by texture and by the modern design, but brown color mingling with the houses red roof-tiles around.
View across the canal added depth to the composition.
Good afternoon,

Dag John
Prima fotowerk.

Bonjour, cher ami John,
La présence de canaux fait ressortir l'habitat, l'architecture toujours aussi belle qui semble garder son aspect d'autrefois.
C'est toujours un plaisir que de découvrir ces lieux chargés d'histoire.
Amitiés.

Hi John.
A beautiful composition with this curve of the canal and its pedestrian part, from this POV look beautifully the beautiful facades of the houses and the tower, also that modern sculpture, which for me is an ugly addition to such a beautiful environment, I feel so sincere, but it's what I feel when I see it.
Very beautiful colorful in very effective tones.
Good management of brightness and superb sharpness.
Magnificent image My congratulations.
All the best and have a good day.
Luis.

Hallo John, that rusty structure is breaking the monotony of the place and enhances the quays. The promenade on the left is perfect to contemplate the canal and the navigation. Fine colors, good sharpness, regards.
