Photographer's Note

Today it is Mardi-Gras, the only day of the year when the Gilles go out and dance for the
carnaval de Binche. Here, you can see a part of the costume of the gille makes with the colors Belgian and decorated with lions. From top to bottom, you can see the colorette, the node, the grelot and the apertintaille (girdles with the small bells).
The gille has two bumps, one in the back and one with the front one. These bumps are made with straw very early the morning (around 4 hours of the morning) by the stuffer. But attention, a gille cannot move without its drum... For that, a tambouror will seek each gille in residence at dawn and follows him all the day in his company until the paddle of the Ash Wednesday...
This tradition goes up with the Middle Ages, one does not know very well when and is since November 2003 declared by UNESCO, world inheritance as masterpiece of the oral and immaterial inheritance of humanity.

Nowdays, this tradition was copied in many cities and villages of Wallonia, of which that where I live (Nivelles). Being given, the success of crowd of the carnival of Binche and also because I was working today, I illustrated the gille by a photo catch in Carnival of Nivelles. I will take part in it besides as I gille also, this Sunday February 29 and this Monday March 1...
