Narrow street Bruges, a photo from West-Vlaanderen, Flanders

Photographer's Note

Back to Bruges, a small but very pictouresque city, narrow streets with the old cobblestone remember to the Middle Ages.
I took this picture late in the afternoon with the Our
of Lady depth in background.

History about this wonderful church.
Inside there are the mausoleum of Mary of Bourgoundy and Charles the Reckless . Het mausoleum of Mary of Bourgoundy (died in 1482) is in gothic style. The bronzen lying statue was made round the yaer 1500. It was moulded by Renier van Thienen and golded by the Brussels goldsmith Pieter de Beckere. The grave of Charles the Reckless (died in 1477) was made later.It is a work of Jacob Jonghelinck from 1558-1563 and isin renaissance-style. There are restored, medieval wall painted graves to see behind glass.

There is also a famous Holy Mary statue with child by Michelangelo from 1503-1504.

The triumfcross in the middlenave dates from the year 1594, carries a statue of Christ by Jan Aerts. The organ is dated from 1597.

From the remarquable paintings we enumerate the 'Adoration of Jezus' by the painter Gerard David from 1520, that recieved sidepanels by Pieter Pourbus in 1573. Pieter Pourbus himself was responsible for the painting 'The last eveningmeal' (1562) and the 'Adoration of the sheppards' (a triptic of 1574). We citate also the work 'Holy Mary of the pains' by Adriaan Isenbrandt (round about 1530) and the painting the 'Adoration of the child by the wize' by Gaspard de Craeyer (from 1662).

De hele straat in de schaduw en toch nog een mooie lucht er boven weten te toveren...je ervaring met raw files is overduidelijk aanwezig.
Die mensen voegen iets toe in de foto, maakt het meer levend en is van toegevoegde waarde aan de foto...prima werk.

An impressive perspective shot where you had your work cut out for you in managing the light given that the street appears to be in shade. The street lead us nicely to the spire in the background. Good work.

Goedemorgen John, een fijne Brugse plaat met een aangenaam en zeer diep en gecurved perspectief. Ons oog wordt werkelijk naar de inderdaad prachtige kerk gezwiept, ook door de mooie plaatsing van de hogelichten. En de weergave van de texturen maakt h.e.e.a. xtra interessant. Heel mooi gedaan weer John!
Een fijne week uit een bewolkt Rotterdam bij 9,5 grd.

long impressing curve offering also some good depth, a shadowed street but some bright roof tops and a blue sky. People taking a walk and the tower at the end of the curve. Great texture and pattern on the large wall and the pavement. I take the church to my theme with churches of our lady.

Another wonderful image from this picturesque town. I do like the curving street as it is much more interesting than a straight street. Excellent details in the shadows and the highlights even though the steeple looks to be just ever so slightly OE'd. Well done.

My wife and I are going to Amsterdam next fall but I really wanted to visit Brussels and Bruges. Is Bruges close enough for a day trip?

framing is masterly with this street in curve and in the shade. The glance slips by naturally towards the bell-tower. One goes there almost without looking at the frontages on the street. Cheer.

John, I like the composition a lot. The bending street, the people walking into the scene and the tower in the far background. What isn't so good is the light management. The upper portion of the image is on the limit of overexposure and I guess that you should have used for this shot a ND grad filter for a better and even light throughout the photography.

Dag, John. Een uitstekend perspectief met die bocht in de straat die ons naar de kerktoren leidt. De belcichting is wel speciaal met een deel in de schaduw en de rest in de zon. Maar dat hebt u zeer goed beheerst. De mensen op het trottoir brengen wat leven in het beeld en geven de schaal.

hello, john. a simple, but beautiful composition with the street leading to the church. even though the light is subtle in the street it definitely has strong magnetism dragging the viewer into the scene. the couple on the right side bring just the "right" amount of human presence. the lone bicycle "just in the right spot" enhances that feel of presence.
