Photographer's Note

Atop the hill south of Mostar is a giant Croatian cross, which could be interpreted as brinkmanship. If you look carefully at the left side of the river, the Croats drink Croatian beer, read Croatian newspapers and live in new apartments, and go to new schools and offices. On the right is the much poorer Muslim quarter where many still await new housing, new roads, and new schools. Partially bombed buildings pepper the eastern side of town on the right. They are practically different countries. A sad legacy of the disintegration of the former Republic of Yugoslavia.
