According to a new check-list (2008), the fish fauna of the Greenland EEZ now contains of 262 fishes in 80
families. Since the latest publication covering all known Greenland fishes in (Nielsen and Bertelsen, 1992), 48 species have been added. Fourteen of the 48 species were added on the basis of taxonomic revisions and/or identification of specimens caught before 1992, whereas 34 species has been caught in Greenland waters
for the first time since 1992. Ten species were new species described since 1992 and four species were
found in old literature that was overlooked in 1992. Only two (Careproctus kidoi and Lycodes mcallisteri) of
the 34 species caught since 1992 are Arctic i.e. caught to the north of the Davis Strait. Of the remaining 32 species caught after 1992 in the southern (Atlantic) regions of Greenland, five species (Maurolicus mulleri, Merlangius merlangus, Helicolenus dactylopterus, Lophius piscatorius, Entelurus aequoreus) are mainly from shallow (< 400 m) and 27 are mainly from deep waters (> 400 m). The explanation for the new deep water records are most likely increased fishing, whereas the new shallow water species seems to be a result of increasing temperatures. The deep waters of Greenland (> 1500 m) are still almost completely unstudied and there seems to be no decline in the rate of new fish species records from Greenland waters. The present talk provides an overview of the ongoing invasion of temperate species into Greenland waters, and discusses the possible impacts for the current fauna and fisheries.
