Photographer's Note

Fixing a lamp in Town Hall Square (Raekoja Plats) in Tartu, eastern Estonia.

Tartu is the second city of Estonia (population just over 100 000). It's mainly known for its university, the nation's oldest, founded in 1632 by the Swedish King Gustavus Adolphus (Gustav II Adolf) to train Lutheran clergy and bureaucrats for the Swedish administration. Most of the Baltic region was ruled by Sweden in those days. The King was killed the same year at the Battle of L慤zen (in present eastern Germany), one of the major battles of the European Thirty Years' War, so switching on the light of learning in Tartu was one of the last decent things he did.

Hi Gert,

So you went also to Tartu (Dorpat). At this Swedish University there were many Polish students when the language was German. Fine city. I remember there is special bridge that students used to climb. Quite amazing is also the big lake nearby - Peipus.
Nice photo, this making a light has here symbolic meaning. Well composed shot. I have similar from Adelaide, maybe I will post it some when.

trovo del tutto originale questo scatto per la particolare situazione che hai ripreso, la quale, anzich� creare disturbo, arricchisce la composizione.
La presenza del riparatore di lampioni con la sua scala completa validamente la composizioneanche per la parte colore in quanto la divisa del riparatore fa da felice contrappunto alla parte bassa dell'edificio, in una situazione di colori ben distribuiti per via di una illuminazione molto morbida.
Un lavoro riuscito molto bene.

You have found a multitude of interesting sights on your trip to Estonia. Not only is this an interesting occupation but the workman is neatly dressed in red!
The step ladders make a good f/g introduction to the focal figure and then, there is so much more of interest beyond.

Hello Gert,

You're capturing well this place by a good composition and excellent tone, so it's interesting and impressive to see a part of the calm Tartu city. It's impressive in Town Hall Square with stone pavement, three stories town hall with lovely shape/wall and clock, and lamp with tall pole. And, residents seem to spend time of recreation and relaxation at this place, respectively.

Hello Gert,
a wonderful association between a daily life scene, the cultural status of the city and its history. I like very much the composition in a verical frame that exalts the scene in the foreground, offers superb depth and displays several moving or still focal points all around. The setting of the peaceful scene is picturesque and attractive, bright and moody colours create a special charm. I find attractive the effect of the sky fading in from the invisible top border. Man at work! Cleverly composed with the figure off-centre, using the suit colours to contrast with the background and this make the image a little more interesting with all the hi visibility in colour as a colour pops the image. We can see what he's doing on a beautiful day here with the background introduces some extra colours and elements into the scene. It looks simple but there is surprisingly a lot more going on than a first glance. I think you have done really well with this happy street candid shot just gives it that bit of zing. Well done, TFS.

A wonderful note with a poetic twist at the end of it too - to celebrate the legacy of King Gustav II Adolf.

Fiat Lux indeed! And here the electrician (I presume these lamps are no longer gas-lit), appropriately dressed in obligatory red is placed perfectly at the upper right crossing point of "thirds" and presents a fine foreground feature before the beautiful red/pink and white town hall.

Excellent composition, lovely light and colours and excellent details and sharpness.

The town hall with its pastel colours looks nice. The man fixing the lamp with a red dress creates a good contrast. You show us a slice of daily life as well...life just passes by!

Very cool shot, we usually see the daily life image of people at work in asia, but nothing like this fixing light or changing light bulbs :) Nice to see something different. The light is not ideal with the clouds, but you made the best of it. Good composition and POV with nice city scape and daily life.
