Place Stanislas in Nancy is one of the most beautiful, if not the most beautiful square in the world. A superb location to sit down with an espresso!

This magnificent square was built between 1752 and 1756 on the orders of Stanisław Leszczyński, the former Polish monarch who in the autumn of his life became Duke of Lorraine...after his daughter had married the French king. The cunning French plan was that after his death Lorraine would become part of France.

The square is one of oldest and finest examples of an architecturally consistent and monumental public square, and is an excellent example of 18th-century urban architecture.rnrnSince 1983, the architectural ensemble comprising Place Stanislas, the extension of its axis, the Place de la Carri鋨e and the Place d'Alliance, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In this picture the central statue of the duke dons the Ukrainian flag as a sign of solidary with and tribute to the suffering of the Ukranian people.

PS: Come to think of it, although the Piazza d'Italia in Trieste comes close, this is indeed my favourite square!

Hi Benny

Apart from the gold and blue Ukrainian tribute centrepiece, I like the many decorative statues atop the bg buildings. Good sharpness, and, unlike Venice, nobody cares if people sit on the steps! Tfs!

Hi Benny,the photo does not perfectly convey the idea of the size of this square that in fact I do not know, but I can understand it thanks to your comparison with Trieste, a nice sign on the statue with the flags of Ukraine, I hope the coffee was good ... ehee .. Hi Benny,
I have never heard about this square or the other one which you mention in your note, I suppose it is time for me to explore France. I guess I should not complain if someone advertises the square with the Polish king on it as the most beautiful.
You certainly had a fantastic weather over there. The Ukrainian flag adds a lovely touch.

Hello Benny, I know that the Place Stanislas (Leszczynski) is beautiful and famous but I had no opportunity to see it in person. Interesting view of the monument with the Ukrainian flag. Nice composition.
