Photographer's Note

Previously I presented the sculpture entitled "Collapse" of Bernar Venet... Here, now, part of the monumental sculpture that welcomes you at the entrance of the Versailles castle and surrounding the equestrian statue of Louis XIV. The title of my photo is the name of the artwork.

Here is the introduction of this exhibition drawn from the website of Bernar Venet.

After playing host to Jeff Koons, Xavier Veilhan, and Takashi Murakami, the Ch漮eau de Versailles has extended an invitation to Bernar Venet to install his monumental cor-ten steel sculptures on their grounds.

From June to October of 2011, Bernar Venet is to display his famous Indeterminate Lines and other monumental sculptures, all designed with the architectural richness, topography, and history of Versailles in mind. These sculptures will be placed on an east/west and north/south axis, the crowning point of which will be two clusters of Vertical Arcs, measuring 22 meters in height, framing the Ch漮eau.

Taking its place this summer alongside the Venice Biennale and the ArtBasel Fair, this exhibition will be a large focal point of substantial media coverage. Not only does the Ch漮eau de Versailles stand out as one of the most magnificent exhibition spaces for contemporary art, but on top of that, it attracts up to 20,000 visitors a day to its gardens, or a total of 853,000 people during the same time period of 2010.

Bernar Venet, born in 1941, started his art career as a painter in the early 1960s alongside other French artists of the Nouveau R嶧lisme movement. In 1966, he moved to the United States and subsequently met major artists of the Minimalist movement: Carl Andre, Donald Judd, Dan Flavin, Sol LeWitt, etc... with whom he frequently exhibited his work at the most prominent galleries of New York: Dwan, Leo Castelli, Paula Cooper, etc...

By the end of the 1970s, his formal development leads him to sculpture. The last fifteen years have seen a group of his sculptures travel the world to Paris, New York, Denver, Houston, San Diego, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Venice, Salzburg, etc...

His exhibition in the gardens of Versailles Palace will be interpreted as a dedication to this course.

Un cadrage id嶧lement choisi pour bien mettre en valuer le dynamisme et l'廦uilibre de cette oeuvre. tr鋊 beau contraste chromatique 嶲alement avec le bleu tendre du ciel.

Hello Jean Charles,

Merci de nous pr廥enter, h幨as seulement un fragment, de cette sculpture monumentale install嶪 devant l'entr嶪 principale du Ch漮eau.
Je suis pass� sp嶰ialement hier devant et je dois dire qu'� mon go壻 ce n'est pas mal du tout vu en perspective avec les grilles et la fa蓷de du ch漮eau.
H幨as des travaux, palissades et 嶰haffaudages, gachent encore plus la vue.
Je comprends que cela fasse d嶵at et c'est un but un peu recherch� par J.J. Aillagon, mais n'en faisons pas une montagne pour faire passer d'autres id嶪s moins nobles, ce 85.8蚊rc 16 n'est l� (pour l'instant) qu'� titre temporaire et il n'y a pas � mon sens crime de l鋊e majest�. Versailles vit enfin et quelque part je ne suis pas s壜 qu'il faille s'en 幦ouvoir m瘱e s'il faut rester vigilant.
Merci de ton abn嶲ation pour nous montrer ce que je crois avoir compris que tu n'appr嶰ie pas.

Belle prise de cette oeuvre, sortie de son contexte, maisd bien situ嶪 dans les WS, sur un beau ciel bleu et avec un choix de cadrage vertical presque obligatoire, en l'occurence.

Tr鋊 technique comme nom de structure.On dirait le nom d'une pi鋃e dans un assemblage, mais la forme en elle-m瘱e est tr鋊 inspirante, comme un effort pour se surpasser. Le cadrage est id嶧l pour transmettre cette impression.

Les formes, la couleur ocre, le ciel bleu sont les 幨幦ents d'une excellente et belle photo habilement compos嶪. En ignorant son contexte, l'oeuvre est pour le moins spectaculaire. Aupr鋊 de l'architecture de Versailles et autour du roi Soleil, ces "c矌es de baleine" sont surprenantes. Excellente r嶧lisation. Bravo.

Belle prise de cette oeuvre de Bernar Venet. Le soleil a mis en valeur du rouge-brun de l𠿟cier. Je m'imagine comme ses courbes de sculptures doivent contraster avec la g廩m彋rie angulaire des jardins du Parc de Versailles...

i remember the 'collapsed' sculpture in your previous shot and now i see it to decorate the entrance of the Versailles castle.I like the POV as the upper part of it outlined against the blue sky. Well done.

I like the elegance and the colours of this sculpture. Thanks to your framing it makes a fine photographic subject. The chromatic combination of the blue sky with the warm brown colour of the sculpture is very appealing, and the fine light make the whole image shine.

in my opinion, what makes this photo stand out and what makes it successful, is the lighting.
the light is warmly bringing to life the man made structure, and the bright blues compliment it too.
