Photographer's Note

ENGLISH VERSION:

The existence of this church is attested since 1346. It was partially destroyed by fire in 1569, the bell-tower was totally rebuilt in 1661, but the actual building was erected between 1781 and 1787. Again, it was totally rebuilt in 1877. Its figure, balanced and powerful, is fined down by an onion dome, completed in 1845, with a lantern opened with twin bays and resting on median pillars.

The 1973 serious fire required the intervention of the Historical Landmarks Commission who classified the building in 1974 and paid for its reconstruction. The spire is covered with patinized steel (hot-painted) in order to look like rusted 1816 tinplate. Its very plain exterior is no precursor to its magnificent baroque decor. Baroque amazes and dazzles by its use of light and movement. The furnishings, the paintings and the architecture stir up a very strong feeling of beauty.
