Opera in HDR, a photo from Rhone Alpes, South

Photographer's Note

Ca y est, j'ai succomb� � la mode actuelle du HDR, et voici mon premier post utilisant cette technique.

La photo repr廥ente l'op廨a de Lyon, � gauche, et l'une des sculptures d'art moderne de la place Louis Pradel.

L'Op廨a a 彋� construit par Soufflot, r嶭abilit� par Chenavard et Pollet, et enfin finalis� dans sa forme actuelle par Jean Nouvel, qui lui ajouta le d獽e caract廨istique qui le coiffe.

En ce qui concerne les aspects techniques, les 800 ISO et le traitement HDR ont contribu� � la g幯廨ation du bruit que vous apercevrez dans le ciel.

This is my first HDR try.
It represents Lyon Opera and a sculpture from Louis Pradel square.

Lyon Opera was built by Soufflot, and have been rehabilitated by Chenavard and Pollet.
Its current shape, with its dome, was created by Jean Nouvel.

I found the combo HDR + ISO 800 created lots of noise in the picture, you can see it in the sky.

Tres int廨essant, je suis un fan du HDR et l'effet escompt� est atteint avec cette image. la sur-saturation des couleurs amene un effet irr嶪l que j'aime bien. j'espere que vous aurez d'autres images semblables � nous montrer. Michel

I love it even if it does not look like a photo at all. The colours, the sharpness and the compo are so good that I been looking at for a quite long time. You mention noise, who cares about it?
A question regarding the sculpture: was the base planned as it is or is it falling a part? For me, it looks ugly.
I just added your picture to my favourites.

Hi JB, welcome to the HDR era. It is really amazing what can be done with a PC. Photography starts to be something more than just finding your composition, the right DOF, shutter time, etc. Finally when can have the feeling of owning a developing room in our house.

That's a good HDR! I should take my camera next weekend and go experimenting on this as well!! Peter is right, it gives you the opportunities of a developing room!

Antonio doesn't care about noise, though I do! The good thing of this beautiful digital developing room is that you can even work on that! See my attached workshop.

Next to the noise, a splendid picture!!

A bit of unearthly color and odd lighting to give this image a very different look. I like the concept and presentation. I want to comment that the sky is way too dark on the left and I see some brush strokes on the right but may these are things that are compelling me to like this image more and more. Well done!

Salut JB. Compositionally, you did a sound job on this one with a good inclusion of the foreground sculpture and an overall interesting architectural ensemble of different stylistic elements. Technically, I acknowledge the HDR result but I also have to say that it looks like a George Lucas special effect rather than a photography.

good first attempt to make a HDR picture. The result is nice, interesting and very effective. The colours are a bit too saturated, but spectacular at the same time. Regarding the noisy sky, did you try to apply Neat Image on it?
Which sw did you used for HDR technique?

Pour un premier post HDR c'est une belle r徼ssite !
Ce traitement donne un cot� un peu irr嶪l avec une lumi鋨e assez extraordinaire.
Les teintes orange apportent une certaine chaleur � ta composition.

J'ai pass� pas mal de temps cette semai,e et le we dernier sur l'hdr. Ca n'a rien donn� de transcendant... Je compe faire un article sur le sujet.
Ton immage est tr鋊 belle mais l'HDR est la pour rendre la photo r嶧liste. Ce n'esyt malheureusement pas le cas... Maintenant la vrai question est de savoir si la photo doit ressembler a la photo de tous les jours ? Pas sur...

Well done with your first HDR shot. I like the composition and the darker colors generated. You are right, there is some noise in the sky area but the rest of the picture compensates for it.

Always amazed at the beauty of European cities. I like the mood of the picture; Almost taken out of a movie. Good perspective with the art work on the first plane and the combination of round and flat lines in the background. A beautiful scene indeed.

Bravo pour cet essai r徼ssi de cette technique qui a le vent en poupe. Plus qu'une photo, on dirait une illustration et le HDR apporte vraiment un c矌� surnaturel. Les couleurs dor嶪s sont magnifiques et contrastent bien avec cette teinte gris / bleu que prend le ciel. C'est tr鋊 esth彋ique bien que certainement pas tr鋊 r嶧liste, mais n'est-ce pas le r犨e du photographe que de donner son interpr彋ation de la r嶧lit� ?

Ah toi aussi tu te lances dans le HDR, j'ai dans l'idee d'y retoucher aussi, faudrait que je trouve une photo qui s'y prete... Commer certains je trouve le rendu plutot space, t'as mis une belle dose de satu, mais bien sur tout depend du resultat que l'on recherche.

J'aime beaucoup l'effet HDR bien que je ne l'ai pas encore essay�. Ici j'aime beaucoup les tons surr嶪listes et les diff廨entes textures. Le fait que le ciel est bruit� fait pens� � un tableau moderne.

Essai r徼ssi me semble t'il pour ce premier HDR. Le r廥ultat est surprenant au niveau des couleurs, m瘱e s'il faut bien reconna褾re que tout cela ne fait pas tr鋊 naturel. Mais bon, c'est tout de m瘱e agr嶧ble � regarder et j'aime les formes arrondies de cette sculpture qui s'廦uilibrenet avec le toit de l'op廨a sur la gauche. Bien vu!

I love the effect here of HDR and well done for your first attempt. I haven't managed to do it yet but am determined to try when I have something suitable to use. I like the composition with the strange sculpture in front of the building and the colour of the sky thanks to the polariser.

An interesting technique, and one that I have yet to try, mainly because I think the results of using HDR seem a bit artificial.
That's the case here, with the level of brightness in the buildings not really matching the darkness of the sky; it doesn't really ring true.
But who say's photography has to reflect "truth" all the time? As an image (looking more like a painting than a photograph it has to be said), this works very well, with the textures enhanced by the process you used. I also like the shades of gold that dominate the image, and the combination with the dark blue of the sky works well.
Interesting work, but is it photography? Does it really matter? I'm undecided about that, but I do like it.

That is so shapy, so classy, so volumetric and so geometric! Wonderful application of HDR, so sharp and almost touchable. A surreal place, with amazing warm colors. I don't konw who wants else, but i exactly want to stand at the exact point you stood there, just now and just in that light. Great!!!

En tous cas le rendu est impeccable avec une espece de lueur qui plane autour de cette place, la gamme de couleurs est impressionnante, tout est parfaitement expos� !

Je me souviens bien de cet endroit que nous avions vu lors de notre rencontre; Je suis assez 彋onn� de ton traitement. (pardonnes moi mais je ne sais pas ce qu'est le HDR) L'effet est r徼ssi. On est un peu plus sur un versant peinture que v廨itable photo. J'admire le travail.

Pas mal du tout pour un premier essai: j'aurais aim� en faire d'aussi beau � mes d嶵uts.

Le seul petit reproche est le halo blanc que l'on distingue autour des aretes.

Cependant il faut aussi reconnaitre que je suis persuad� que m瘱e sans HDR ta photo aurait 彋� tr鋊 belle aussi...

Je n'ai pas encore eu l'occasion de tester cette technique mais elle apporte quelque chose de particulier � l'image, quelque chose d'irr嶪l.

Les couleurs et les teintes sont grandioses tout comme la composition � la base de cette cr嶧tion.

Great picture regardless of the noise. If you want to minimize noise when shooting HDRI pictures I suggest you to put your camera on a solid tripod and use the lowest ISO value allowed by your camera. Remove any filter from your lens (if you have any), chose a rather narrow aperture (I always use F11) and with the remote control trip the shutter 5 or 6 times always changing its speed (+ / - 3 stops from the center exposure).
Use the function "Merge in HDR" in Photoshop (crom version CS2 onward).
Give final finishing with the usual tools.
