Photographer's Note
Citadel's entry of the town of Besancon.
The citadel spreads on 11 hectares and overhangs of more than 100 meters the old town of Besancon. Conceived by the military engineer french, Vauban (born in Vezelay in Bourgogne), it was completed in 1711. This brilliant engineer will revolutionize techniques the of siege and fortification at that time in Europe.
A little history about this city during this period:
The town of Besancon and its area remained a long time under the protection of the emperors of Germany (5 centuries). In 1651, it was then yielded to the king of Spain, Philippe IV. Hitherto prosperous, the city was conquered with the remainder of the area of Franche-Comté in 1668 per Louis XIV, king of France. No long after, he returned the city to Spanish by the peace treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle. But the war against Spain flaring up again in 1674, Louis XIV took one second time Besancon and made it strengthen by Vauban.

Very nice shot, Philippe - those old castles and fortresses make wonderful photo subjects, particularly at this time of year when they are embedded in a fabulous green landscape. A lot of nice angles and shapes in this view that keep the viewer busy exploring for a while. Great color setting and it's good you were able to include the pedestrians on the bridge. Well captured, and a good job on the note, too.
GREAT song title - not one of Sting's best known, but one of my favorites of his.
