Photographer's Note

All of Rothenburg is like a medieval museum with its well preserved architecture and lack of modern structures and commercialism. It survived many sieges during the middle ages, thanks to its encircling walls and fortifications, remaining unconquered for nearly 600 years from its founding in 980 until a siege during the Thirty Years' War in 1631. This war, between the Catholics and Protestants, was won by the Catholic army, moving in 40,000 soldiers and sacking the citizens for three months. After they left, the black plague struck, killing over half the population. This left Rothenburg basically asleep for 200 years and preserving its medieval structures.
Today Rothenburg continues its rich heritage by laws protecting against constructing modern buildings and advertising.
