Photographer's Note
The Wall is Gone!!
Twenty-five years ago today meant the fall of the Berlin Wall, meaning the possibility for the citizens of Eastern Berlin/DDR to pass into West-Berlin without any visa or any specified reason. And to return!
After 28 years the border was opened and the removal of the 44 kms (27 miles) of wall between the two Berlins was initiated. Most of it were the well-recognized 3,6 meter (12 feet) high concrete elements with a rounded top - so well suited for graffiti.
But in front of the Brandenburger Tor - where the border made a large curve on the western side - a lower, broader wall with a flat top was used. This is where you see people standing on the wall on the 9th of November 1989.
When I visited in 1990 many parts of the wall were still standing - although with large holes - but here in front of the Brandenburger Gate it was completely removed. So what you see are the remains of the wall, but still a border between two countries.
In October that year Germany was unified and DDR ceased to exist!
