HafenCity

The area between Speicherstadt and the River Elbe has been under redevelopment since 2008, when the district of HafenCity was created on the island of Grasbrook. Its aim was to revitalise the former Hamburg free port area (which could be reduced in size due to EU free trade) by creating office space, shops, hotel and residential areas. The main landmark of the area is the concert hall Elbphilharmonie (Elbe Philharmonic Hall), which is seen in the centre of this photo.

Elbphilharmonie is one of the largest and most advanced concert halls in the world. Opened in 2017, its large glass construction sits on top of an old warehouse from 1963. I will certainly post some close-up photos later as well, as it was my main reason for visiting Hamburg. The tower at left is Columbus-Haus, part of the Hanseatic Trade Center, built in the 1990s.
