Photographer's Note

A scene captured in the area Kokkina, Merikia, a little while before the inauguration of a monument dedicated to soldiers of all nationalities executed during WW2 at a beach further down the hill, behind the car.

A big thank you to WW2 expert Andreas Galanos for the following information (which hopefully I have translated accurately).

This vehicle is a reconstructed GPW Ford 1942. This type of car was used by the Greek Sacred Squadron in operations against the Italians and the Germans in the Middle East. It carried weapons, supplies and fuel that allowed great autonomy of movement. It had also gone under the necessary mechanical reinforcement in order to cope with the harsh desert conditions.

The Sacred Squadron was a special commando corps that operated along with and under the command of famous British corps such as LRDG (Long Range Desert Group), SAS, SBS and others. Their aims were: harassment of the transportations of the Axis, sabotage, collection of information, commando operations in general. The crew of this military car were Greek officers belonging to the Sacred Squadron and bearing uniforms, arms and equipment provided by the British Army.

The car belongs to the Hellenic Military Vehicules Preservation Association (http://www.sdio.gr)
and was put together after meticulous reasearch and personal work by Iannis Zissis. It bears authentic pieces of equipment and it's fascinating to learn about the officers' daily life and operations through these items.

Both Andreas Galanos and Iannis Zissis feature in this photo.

Thank you for visiting, a lovely week to all
