Castle and Chora of Patmos, a photo from Dodekanisos, South Aegean

Photographer's Note

In 1088, a soldier monk named Christodoulos supported by Byzantine emperor Alexius Komnenus, started building a monastery on the hill overlooking the harbour of Patmos. He built it upon the ruins of a temple dedicated to Artemis, in the name of John the Divine (Theologian), one of Christ's disciples who, while exiled on the island (94-96 A.D.), envisaged and composed the Revelation (Apocalypse).
The monastery was heavily fortified for defence against pirate attacks.
In the 16th and 17th centuries the island of Patmos knew great economic prosperity as many of its inhabitants had become successful seamen, shipowners and merchants. They built impressive houses and mansions and gave Chora the form it retains until our days.
The Monastery and Chora have been declared World Heritage monuments by UNESCO.

anzitutto Tanti Auguri per la Pasqua che ricorre oggi!
Bellissima la veduta del castello di Patmos, con tutte le case bianche che fanno da cornice. Una luce leggermete dorata rende la foto ancora pi� gradevole. Le case e il castello creano con le loro forme un delizioso grafismo.
Magnifico il POV, il framing e la nitidezza.

Hello Ourania,

The photographer must build an empathy with the viewer if he wants his/her capture perceived properly. You're achieving this perfectly with your extensively useful notes. This one is another good example. Your concise notes covering almost a thousand years helps the viewer to develop emphaty and interest with the scenery. Your composition is excellent, building from bottom to up, first the elegant white Aegean houses (built respectfully and giving enough importance to not covering up their neighbor's view) and at the summit, the magnificent Castle with a different color (as if it is the only one authorized to use a different color). Your light management is masterful, produced wonderful colors and shadows. I very much liked this one my friend, I can view and dream on it for hours. Happy Easter to you and your family. Magnificent composition, with great charm with these beautiful houses so uniform, not only in white, but in the designs of their windows, beige to match the color that gives us the impressive fortress that dominates the of the town, an extraordinary image, you've captured a perfect light and very nice natural coloration.

πολύ όμορφη και γραφική παραουσίαση του κάστρου του νησιού με τα άσπρα σπίτια να φτάνουν σχεδόν μέχρι την κορυφή του.Μου αρέσει αυτό το κοντραστ των χρωμάτων,το γλυκό και ζεστό χρώμα της καινούργιας ημέρας νομίζω,με την αναφορά σου στο ονομαστό Μοναστήρι που είναι ένα από τα κύρια και σπουδαιότερα λατρευτικά σημεία της Χριστιανοσύνης.

I think the soft diffused light from the overcast sky has helped you here. Those white highlights would be blown out in full sun! They are just perfect as they are here! I like the red tinted fort atop the hill contrasting against the blur grey tints of the sky. Tfs!

Hello Ourania,
While the trees on the foreground are already in the shadow, the evening sun still illuminates the village and the castle with a beautiful light.
It's impressive how this castle towers over the village but also the houses look wonderful.
It must be a pleasure to wander around there and to admire the beautiful decorations around the windows. All decorations are in the same colour: the colour of the monastery/castle.
The picture is taken from a very good angle.

You're capturing well this place bt a good angle and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see strong castle with brown wall and beautiful crowded houses standing mountain's slope. The House has a good design on white wall, too. And, the green trees in this side draw out a good atmosphere in this image.

sei molto brava e le tue foto sono ricche di molte foto ricche di fascino.
Oggi voglio lasciare un commento a questa che � incantevole nel bel contrasto tra il colore bruno del castello e il bianco abbagliante delle case che hai saputo riprendere molto bene sia per la scelta del punto di ripresa che per l'ottica che comprimendo i piani rendela sensazione che le case si stringano le une alle altre.
Ottima la composizione in diagonale e bella la luce piuttosto calda che illumina case e castello lasciando che il cielo uniforma faccia da sfondo.
Una bella cittadina che non conoscevo, ma che, guardandola, si vorrebbe visitare.
