Ruined hangars, rusty gates, weedy taxiways on an abandoned military airport.
The airport of S嫫mell幧 was used by the Soviet Army between 1960-1990. About 70-80 fighter planes (MIG-21, MIG-23 and MIG-29) were stationed here hidden in these camouflaged hangars.
The soldiers lived in the barracks on the premises of the airport, while the higher ranked officers lived with their families in the neighbouring village.
The last 17 planes left for Minsk on 4 October 1990.
After the Soviets left the airport, the runway and the control tower were refurbished and a new passenger terminal was built. Now the airport is the second busiest public commercial airport of Hungary used by companies like Lufthansa, Malev, Ryanair, Helvetic and Germanwings.
But the past is still haunting among the bushes just a few steps from the runway...
