Akureyrarkirkja
After all the natural beauty we now visit Akureyi, the largest city of Iceland outside the Reykjavik region, in the North of Iceland.
After a few clearings, the weather is clouded again and almost dry.
First we visit the Akureyrarkirkja, located in the centre of the city, towering above the city on a hill. It was designed by Guðjón Samúelsson, and completed in 1940. A remarkable striking design. In my opinion a less successful combination of modern architecture and traditional forms.
■ The main photo shows 3 beautiful stained glass windows. The right window is linked to my previous photo. Þorgeir is depicted on the window, who threw his statues of the pagan god into the waterfall Goðafoss.
■ The first workshop shows the façade above the entrance in close up. A nice tight graphic composition, where the windows bring some colour between all the shades of grey.
■ The second workshop finally shows the church in full size from its best side, the front facade. It is clear to see how the church is built on a hill.
■ Main picture: ◙ stained glass windows
■ Workshop 1: ◙ above the entrance
■ Workshop 2: ◙ front facade

Bonjour Rob,
Je me souviens de l'époque où je courrais les églises et les cathédrales pour faire ce genre de photos. J'ignore pourquoi je ne le fais plus car j'aime beaucoup ce genre de composition chez les autres.
Amicalement

Hello Rob,
I feel I'm not quite able to judge the quality of the church's design, but as seen in the WS #2 it makes quite an impression from that low angle. WS #1 is an amusing composition, slightly bewildering at first. As for these windows they are very well done in a modern style with strong roots in traditional religious art. The photos are all of a high quality with fine exposure.
Thank for your comments on my latest photo. The two WS interiors of the cathedral were actually ©Malgo.
Best regards,
Gert

The WS #2 shows the unique church design, while we see the attractive art-work of the stained glass in the main photo, Rob. Nicely collected all.
Used well the outside light to enhance the vivid colors of the window.
Good afternoon,
Ike

Hello Rob, eye catching stained glass, modern but with recognisable stories from the Bible.
The two shots showing the architecture are very interesting, the church is a striking design.I am surprised that it was completed in 1940, it looks younger than that.
I assume that the three characters on the bottom of each window are Icelandic people?
Thanks for sharing, regards Jean.

Hi Rob,
The subject is well framed. The point of view is showing the details of the stained glass windows. I appreciate effect of the light coming through the windows on the colors. Have a nice day.

Hallo Rob,

Hello Rob, I do not know if this is a college or the picture from the interior wall. Anyway, these modern stained glass windows are very beautiful. Excellent presentation, superb sharpness and colours.
Now the pictures are very big, there is a need of scrolling the screen. Appealing compositions.
Kind regards Malgo

Dag Rob,
John

Hello Rob,
Thank you for this fine, linked series.
I had not, at first linked the casting of the pagan idols into the water, I thought it was a reference to the fact that when Christianity was first adopted, bits of the old religion carried over and were knitted into the new religion! They are beautiful windows and very clearly photographed.
The church really has an impact! It looks like an angel with uplifted arms!
Have a good w/e,
Bev :-)

Hi Rob
yes, I remember this church very well. I spent a few hours in this city, but then moved on. If I remember correctly, I found the prices of the hotels for too expensive here. Photographing the church was a lot of fun, its a unique design for sure. you came away with an excellent stained glass shot. love the pop of color, the clarity, and just the overall image sharpness. nice one. cheers

Hello Rob,
I've found out the hard way that it is very difficult to get correct metering for stained glass window shots. My last effort I was successful in Bologna as I bracketed and deleted until it was just right. I have another from Prague I might load one of these days. This one is just as impressive. Perfect exposure and sharpness with good colour & lighting. Tfs!
