Photographer's Note
Fjaðrárgljúfur is an astounding canyon in southern Iceland (see map view of location), one of the most spectacular sights in a land full of them. The Fjadar River flows through it to the sea, with vertical cliffs of moss-covered rock towering 100 metres above the quite shallow water. The canyon is 2km long and can be viewed, as shown in this photo, from look-out points, or from the stream itself, where no paths have been made, but where the water is shallow enough to allow one to walk a reasonable distance in wading gear. Other photos can be taken from the river, beyond the point where the cliffs end and the stream finishes its journey to the sea. The canyon was formed over the aeons by the erosive action of glacial melt-water.

Hello Andrew,
A fascinating capture of this river meandering its way through these mighty cliffs. Excellent rendering of the colour and textural detail despite the rather unhelpful sky.

Hello Andrew,
This looks spectacular. Good sharpness and I like the meandering stream and elevated viewpoint. Excellent sharpness with a pleasant diffused light. The repetition of the rock spires adds charm. Tfs!

Hello Andrew, a place in Iceland that I haven't seen before; I like your point of view as you look along the canyon. It is hard to imagine that the cliffs are 100 metres above the river.
The colours and textures are beautiful.

Hi Andrew
I always find it's so difficult to photograph canyons becuase of the high contrast in sunny weather. Here, the overcast light is perfect. We can see precisely how this incredible terrain is sculptured.
Best wishes

Hello, Andrew!
That's really a spectacular and breathtaking view of this canyon, you captured it with very good colors in spite of the bad weather, with beautiful and natural tones of green around the river! The POV is perfect to show that! Wonderful place and composition!

Bonjour, cher Andrew,
Parfois, l'on dirait que la nature s'amuse à jouer les paysagistes en créant des lieux extraordinaires.
La beauté des lieux est remarquable.

Hello Andrew,
Isn't it amazing to think that the rushing water has created this sculptured canyon, composed so very well in your photograph. You have included the textured cliff, on the right, to anchor the f/g and create this excellent sense of depth to the meandering river.
I suppose that, because it is so shallow, it creates this strongly rippled surface.
The lack of bright sunlight must really have been an advantage in that there were no really strong lighting contrasts and the cloudy sky does add atmosphere.
Have a lovely day,
Bev :-)

Excelente foto!

Hello Andrew. I am fascinatined by these Icelandic names, How it is possible to pronounce anything? Beautiful canyon, maybe not high but with the interesting rock formations. Is there a path along it without going in the stream?

Hello Andrew,
From your chosen point of view you can see quite far into the canyon.
A stunning view of the gently meandering river and the vertical cliffs that are nicely covered with moss on lots of places. Some peaks are very sharp. Others look rather like a table mountain.
A magnificent landscape picture.
Best regards, Paul
