Pretty photo of these spiral stairs! The composition is great and the ghost effect of people walking is well done!

Hello Jana,

Excellent photo, with good composition and exposure. The slow shutter speed has accentuated the movement of the crowd descending.

On July 12, 2007 I was at the same spot, inspired by the staircase that Leonardo first envisioned, but built in the early 20th century. One of the two intertwined double-helical spirals was close on July 12th as it was when you shot the photo on July 1 last year. Eight years ago when I last visited the spot, both spirals were open, one to ascend from and the other to descend (as is seen in the photo).

The great German physicist Werner Heisenberg once observed, "Never underestimate how much pleasure it gives a person to see/hear what he already know." Knowing this staircase so well, I am especially gratified. I am the author on a book on Leonardo, "Math and the Mona Lisa," and writing a new book for the National Geographic.

I love the dark colours in this shot - and the depth speaks for itself. I guess the people are adding to that whirlpool feeling.

Good chose of perspective and lights. The exposure make a motion blur that gives a sense of movement to people.
