Piazza Duomo y Fontana, a photo from Messina, Sicily

Photographer's Note

As is the case with most small Italian cities, the main street of Taormina leads to the main church of the city. In Taormina, that means that when you walk along the Corso Umberto, it is very likely that you will reach the Piazza del Duomo and the cathedral itself.

Duomo de Taormina, dedicated to San Nicol� di Bari, was built in the 13th century and its design is typical of many churches of its time; the exterior resembles more a castle than a house of worship. For this reason, it has the nickname of the "fortress cathedral" or "fortezza cattedrale".

The Duomo was built on the ruins of an existing small church, and the pink marble of Taormina used in the construction of the columns seems to have been taken from the ruins of the Greco Theater that is located above the city. The main door was rebuilt in the 1630s in the Renaissance style and a rose window was added on that same wall.

The centaur, emblem of Taormina, dominates the beautiful Baroque fountain, in the center of this square. But that centaur is a woman, and instead of showing four legs, as centaurs usually do, it has two arms, very useful for holding the globe and the scepter that symbolizes power.

Como es el caso de la mayor燰 de las peque鎙s ciudades italianas, la calle principal de Taormina conduce a la iglesia principal de la ciudad. En Taormina, eso significa que cuando camina a lo largo del Corso Umberto, es muy probable que llegue a la Piazza del Duomo y a la propia catedral.

Duomo de Taormina, dedicado a San Nicol� di Bari, fue construido en el siglo XIII y su dise隳 es t甑ico de muchas iglesias de su 廧oca, el exterior se asemeja m嫳 a un castillo que una casa de culto. Por esta raz鏮, tiene el apodo de la "catedral fortaleza" o "fortezza cattedrale�.

El Duomo fue construido sobre las ruinas de una peque鎙 iglesia existente, y el m嫫mol rosa de Taormina utilizado en la construcci鏮 de las columnas parece haber sido sacado de las ruinas del Teatro Greco que se encuentra por encima de la ciudad. La puerta principal fue reconstruida en la d嶰ada de 1630 en el estilo renacentista y un roset鏮 fue a鎙dido en esa misma pared.

El centauro, emblema de Taormina, domina la bella fuente barroca, en el centro de esta plaza. Pero ese centauro es mujer, y en vez de mostrar cuatro patas, como suelen los centauros, tiene dos brazos, muy 𠋥iles para sujetar el globo terr嫭ueo y el cetro que simboliza el poder.

Hi Luis
at first glance, the photo could use a little tilt correction as its leaning upwards - but thats an easy fix in post processing :) Again at first glance I notice the bright warm colors and the warm light striking the exteriors, very nice indeed. good to have the contrasting blue sky, warm and cool tones. nice one. cheers

Hello Luis,
The plant and the shadow of the buildings on the foreground add more depth to the picture.
A beautiful large fountain and many plants and flowers on the different terraces provide a charming and picturesque view of the small square.

I spent several weeks in Taormina, but I don't remember seeing this fountain in front of the pharmacy. Good sharpness, colour and saturation and the people animate the scene and provide scale. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Luis,
The sunlight was ideal here and added such a vivid and warm hue to the charming houses on the other side of the square. The people walking and taking photos around the fountain give a pleasant and peaceful mood. Superb sharpness and clarity too.

Luis, la antigua fuente situada en una calle adoquinada atrae a numerosos turistas. Algunos posan delante de ella o la fotografian. Me gusta la arquitectura local, las casas con balcones de hierro forjado. El cielo azul es hermoso. Excelentes colores. Perfecta calidad de imagen.

I reckon the fountain from yester years has 'posed' for many tourists in the past...it looks cool backed by such pretty architecture of same age. Indeed a relaxing square to mingle while absorbing what's presented here. Love the colours too, in particular the speck of vivid red. Excellent shot
