Photographer's Note
Today we enter the church whose exterior I showed you in my last post. Repeated archaeological excavations made it possible to reconstruct the history of the church. On the site stood a non-religious Roman building whose walls were almost parallel to those of the church today, and with a walkway about a meter below the current one, and you can see some part of the excavations, conducted several times in 1919-25 and in 1955-58, in the WS. The vast and solemn interior, with a trussed roof, is divided into three naves by bare columns with classical capitals, confirming the widespread use throughout the Middle Ages of re-using classical elements of different origins in new buildings. on each side.A column with a capital with two-bodied sphinxes has precise correspondences with one found in the Auditorium di Mecenate in Rome.
In the western part a Gothic ciborium, from the early 14th century, marks the place where St. Peter would have preached for the first time. An eighteenth-century wooden crucifix, originally placed on the high altar, is now placed in the right aisle.
The numerous seventeenth-century side altars have been completely eliminated. I will complete the series from this church with a view on the ancient frescoes, also perfect for Christmas wishes.

Ciao Luciano,
what a beautiful interior, so pity that the frescoes are bit faded but at least they are preserved and we can only imagine how beautiful it was in the past.
I like the multitude of the slim columns which add so much elegance here.
Great reportage,

Ciao Caro Luciano,
What an interesting, well exposed group of photographs!
It is so interesting to see how that curved exterior has been used internally
'Solemn' describes the interior of the building very well. It does have a the character of a very ancient building.
It must be a most interesting building to explore and to excavate. The problem with excavations (though I would love to do it) is that you have to disturb or destroy the upper layer to find what is hidden beneath!
I wish you a very Happy Christmas, whether at home or accepting the role of Father Christmas, Bev :-)

Hello Luciano
The available lighting on aided well with your final presentation. Just beautiful and astounding how these buildings have stood the test of time. Artisans to the highest degree. Nice work and great note. Merry Christmas

Hello Luciano,
This is a truly beautiful interior, also nicely presented in the WS. I love these clean lines and plain walls, so much nicer to my mind than most overdecorated Baroque churches. The frescos are a bit faded but still beautiful. There is a surprisingly good light inside this old church, and you used it well for a very sharp and clear photo.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Luciano,
A wonderful view of the church with nice and bright light on the old walls, where the ancient paintings look somewhat faded, but still really beautiful with some pleasant, warm tones. I like the repetition of the arches also.

Ciao Luciano
It seems there are spectacular old churches everywhere you go in Italy. If the exterior is unimpressive then the interior is usually stunning. The design almost looks Moorish and reminded me of Cordoba. Tfs!

Hi Luciano.
Certainly the interior of the church is a jewel, ideal are the arches that divide the naves and how elegant the three at the bottom that divide the apse, that kind of temple I have seen in some very old churches, great how these old paintings are preserved.
The photos of the WS have left me astonished, because I had not realized that it has two apses and the main altar is on the left.
Point of view, sharpness, lightness, color and the chosen composition are excellent.
A very beautiful photo. I like it.
Enjoy this atypical Christmas, together with your loved ones, with caution.
All the best for you and yours.
Luis.

Hello Luciano,
This church interior must once have been very colourful.
There seem to be only a few smaller windows, but the interior still looks very bright.
Beautiful sharp presentations in all three photos.

Hello Luciano,
A well-preserved interior. Not as elaborate as some of the newer churches, but elegant nevertheless.
Merry Christmas,
