Photographer's Note

A view of Il Campo, the huge central square ( or semi-circle!) in Siena, taken late afternoon.
The on the right hand side of the Campo is the Palazzo Pubblico, now home to a civic museum, and its 97 metre tall bell tower, the Torre del Mangia.

Each year the Campo is the setting for a series of bareback horse races between the various neighbourhoods, or contrade, of the town. I saw some footage of the races on TV and they look very exciting with a great atmosphere. The circuit around the campo is very tight for the speed they race so the riders often crashed into the walls or barriers looked a bit dangerous.

This view was taken from the upper levels of the Museo dellOpera del Duomo which, as its name suggests, is near the Duomo.

Tech: This is a scan of a velvia slide, converted to greyscale then a sepia tone added using duotone in Photoshop. Slight crop and increase in brightness and contrast.
