San Francesco renounces paternal assets - Church of San Francesco - Montefalco (PG)
The apse of the church of San Francesco in Montefalco is completely decorated by Benozzo Gozzoli with Stories from the life of St. Francis, Saints and Personages of the Franciscan order in 1452. These frescoes represent the first extraordinary testimony of the achievement of the "status" of independent teacher by Gozzoli, he had previously been a collaborator of Fra Angelico. The frescoes were commissioned by Fra 'Jacopo Mactioli da Montefalco, prior of the convent. The twenty episodes of the Saint's Life are narrated within twelve scenes arranged on three registers, the narration proceeds from left to right, starting from the bottom.
The vaults of the apse are decorated with plant elements, figures of Franciscan saints and Gloria di San Francesco.
Francis' renunciation of paternal goods, in the presence of the bishop of Assisi, is narrated since the Vita Prima of Tommaso da Celano. Gozzoli's fresco is a faithful transcription in a Renaissance key of the fifth picture of Assini's Franciscan Legend. To Francesco's right, a frowning Bernardone looks indignantly at his rebellious son, while the bystanders discuss perplexed. On the far left of the picture two children, one of whom is holding a stone to throw it to the saint.
It reads QUALITER B (EATUS) FRANCISCUS CORA (M) EPISCOPO ASISII REN (UNTIA) VIT PATRI HEREDITATEM PATERNAM ET O (M) NIA VESTIMENTA ET FEMORALIA PATRI REIECTI (When the blessed Francis in front of the bishop of Assisi and his father renounced inheritance and stripped of all clothes including underwear).

Hello Silvio,
It's great to see such an old painting still looking in good condition. It's a masterpiece of early Renaissance art, which is even more evident from the big view in the WS. The interior view of the church provides a good complement, but my greatest pleasure is to watch this close view of the beautiful colours and the artists skillful technique.

it is a pity we can't to take photos of the precious murals in assisi church . this one looks very interesting and well done. excellent detail with a saint francis in blond hair, we ever think about him as a brunet.
