Consolation Church - San Fortunato - Montefalco (PG)
The Church of the Consolation is located near the convent of San Fortunato.
A grandiose building in the form of a Greek cross that has long been abandoned and today is in complete ruin.
Its origin dates back to a shrine painted with an image of the Madonna, in front of which a cripple was miraculously healed on May 20, 1584.
Two years later the procedures for the construction of the temple began, which began after much controversy with the laying of the first stone placed for the second time on May 8, 1588 by the Montefalco Bishop Clemente Bontadosi of Nicastro.
The design was carried out by Captain Gelio Parenzi of Spoleto, but an intervention by the Perugian architect Valentino Martelli (present on site in 1589 and 1603-5) is not excluded, who was made a "noble citizen" of Montefalco "for his particular kindness which has always led and leads to our Earth ".
In fact, the plan of the church repeats that of the Crucifix of Todi certainly designed by Martelli in those years.
In 1607 the custody of the temple was entrusted to the Jesuati Fathers who remained there until 1652.
During the construction of their house, digging underground they found an ancient factory of reinforced arches, and walled up with triangular bricks, certainly the remains of a Roman building.
Inside, uncovered, there remains the primitive aedicule with a fresco dated 1577; and, on the right, a grandiose stucco altar, built by the Compagnia dei Bifolchi in 1675.
An opportune and necessary restoration could still save this rare late-Renaissance building, otherwise destined to final ruin.

Ciao Silvio
The sunlight has given the facades of the bg building a nice warm glow, which contrasts well against the blue sky. Good sharpness and fg shadow detail. Tfs!

Hello Silvio,
This is a very impressive building, and the beauty of its details is enhanced by the warm light. The colourful tree in the foreground benefits the composition. Both WS photos are good complements. Especially the one with the little boy is very nice.
Best regards,
Gert

Ciao Caro Silvio,
I was so surprised to learn that this is a ruin!
From this angle, it looks like a really well kept, substantial building. Its walls look in good repair in this bright sunlight.
I like that w/s with the small boy.
It was interesting to learn that this building is in the shape of a Greek Cross and that it is sitting on the ruins of a much older, Roman building.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Ciao Silvio,
nice church structure but here of course the most eye catching is the pleasantly warm light which seems to be focused entirely on the building while leaving everything else in the shadow.
Very well seen and captured,
M

The warm sunlight gives a nice glow to this surprising ruin, the tree picks up the red details in the photo.

Hello Silvio,
Nice contrast between the dark foreground and the well lit upper part of the picture.
The warm tones of the light coloured church make it stand out well under the blue sky.
Best regards, Paul
