Vulgar Name: Mediterranean Nymph

Family: Nymphalidae

Subfamily: Satyrinae

Tribe: Coenonymphini

Front wing length mm. 14-18

Male: anterior wings of orange color almost totally veiled in dark, with a black apical stain of varying sizes in different populations. Rear orange with dark shade, some black postdiscal spots and black marginal designs.

Female: but a larger unit than the male. Front wings of orange color with shades of gray and black border, shaded gray. At the top there is a black spot of varying sizes in different populations. Rear orange with dark shade, some black postdiscal spots and black marginal designs.

Reverse: orange front wings with traces of whitish postdiscal band at the apex where there is a black spot, white pupil and yellowish outline. Posterior of orange color with grayish basal shade, a wide whitish postdiscal band and several large black ocellated spots, white pupillated and surrounded by orange. Slender silver marginal line present in both wings.

Distribution: Western Alps and the Apennines

Habitat: Xerothermophile species is found in the rocky slopes of the basal piano and mounts up to about 1400 meters s.l.m.

Annual generations: one with flickering of adults in June-July.

Nourishing plants: Festuca sp, Agrostis sp.

This is an incredibly beautiful composition. It is perfectly sharp, the butterfly has fantastic colours and they match the surroundings so well.

Silvio, great macro that presents a butterfly landed on a stem. Its body is downy whereas its wings are golden with black spots and a beige part. The photo note summarizes well information about the species. Fine colors, good sharpness, regards.

Hello Silvio, the sharp focusing on the butterfly is excellent. We see some backlighting too which highlights the colours of its' wings.
