Spoleto Cathedral

The church of Santa Maria Assunta is the cathedral of the city of Spoleto, seat of the archbishop of the archdiocese of Spoleto-Norcia. The first news of the building is dated 956, when the episcope and a first cathedral, called Santa Maria del Vescovato, already existed in this area, built between the eighth and ninth centuries. A bishop's decree of 1067 also ascertains the presence of another building belonging to the cathedral group, the so-called tribune of San Primiano, dating back to the 9th century. The construction of today's Cathedral was started after 1155, the year in which Spoleto was devastated by the imperial army of Frederick Barbarossa, and ended between the 12th and 13th centuries, when the Popes Innocent III in 1198 and Honorius III in 1216, solemnly consecrated the new building.
