Monastery of the Sacro Speco
Upper Church
The Upper Church is the tallest structure in the Sacro Speco and was the last part of the sanctuary to be built. Its interior is made up of two irregular bays, both in plan and in elevation, a consequence of the various changes made.
The interior has a single nave, with a Latin cross pint, but very irregular, generated by various construction phases: a further span was subsequently added to an older part.
The outermost span, near the entrance, is rectangular and is much higher than the internal one; they are separated by a transverse arch, which rests on shelves decorated with leaf motifs: from here the ribs of the first cross towards the entrance start.
