Madonna del Latte

Gentile da Rocca
Tempera painting on wood
Coming from Santa Maria ad Gryptas Fossa (L'Aquila).
On the front of the suppedaneo of the throne we read: A (nno) M CC OCTOGESIMO Ill GENTIL (鮀) D (e) ROCCA ME Pl (nxit). (In the year of the Lord 1283 Gentile da Rocca painted me)
The author, the first Abruzzese artist known by his historical name, is documented between 1271 and 1296 in his native Roccamorice on the northern side of the Maiella, where he was in relationship with Pietro Angelerio, the future Pope Celestino V, performing the first artistic commissions of the monastic congregation he founded.
The Child blesses in the Latin style and with his left hand holds an open volume on which you can read some words from the Gospel of John: EGO SUM LUX MUNDI QUI SEQUITUR (I am the light of the world, whoever follows [me will not walk in darkness ... ]).
