Photographer's Note

Coronation of the Virgin between Blessed Giovanni Colombini and San Girolamo
Tempera on ribbed panel with mutilated sides and base, the original frame is fragmentary; 130 x 140 cm. Sano di Pietro, 1473.
Signed and dated, it comes from the monastery of Saints Gervasio and Protasio in Capo dAcqua di Gualdo, from where it was transported, at an unspecified time, to the town church of San Francesco. The mutilated figures of two angels and the two characters below indicate that the painting was cut, perhaps to fit into a smaller space.
A late inscription on the back identifies the two saints at the base as two Gualdese characters: Andrea di Paolo and the blessed Angelo.
Andrea di Paolo, belonging to the noble family of the Marquises of Tor dAndrea, a Benedictine monk, established the Cistercian Congregation of the Body of Christ in Gualdo in 1328. Blessed Angelo, born around
in 1270 and died in 1324, he lived in the monastery from which the work comes.
In reality they are correctly identifiable as Blessed Giovanni Colombini and San Girolamo.
