A Maltese Falcon

Something completely different today, I saw this beautiful bird of prey while exploring the southern coast of Malta. A subspecies of the peregrine falcons is the so-called Maltese falcon or Mediterranean peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus brookei), although comparing pictures of this species with the one I caught, I don㦙 think this is an actual Maltese falcon. It was sitting with its keeper at the side of the road from the town of Żurrieq to the coast, while it caught the last rays of sunlight in 2018.

Hi Lars.

A beautiful capture of the falcon, great details and natural colours. I hope the owner gives the bird free air time once in a while. Animals in captivity never enjoy fullness of their capabilities nor they enjoy true happiness. Still, it's nice to see from a close distance the real one. TFS!!!

Hello Lars,
One thing noticed rightb away and a bothering one: The beautiful bird is not free, it was tied with a heavy rope.
Though the picture is marvelous and well collected, the fact that it is a pity, IMHO, the poor bird can't fky... a sad look on its eyes.

Excellent use of a shallow dof with good sharpness on the falcon. Superb colour, lighting and saturation. The rust red feathers and green nest contrast well with the shadowed grey bg. Tfs!

well, this is a different subject to photograph from Malta haha. why not right? I wonder what he and its owner were doing here at the side of the road..seems a little strange. but hey, why not take a photo. we can get a small glimpse of its eye, but its main beauty in the photo is its chest and feathers. nice one. cheers

More important than the name of the bird are the excellent details that you have captured of this falcon's facial features, talons and plumage. There is no doubting the capability of this majestic bird.
Skilled use of shallow dof so the b/g is non-distracting.

a pity the animal is caught, it would be nice if it was in freedom, but to take photos it is easier this way. nice details of the animal whose name is linked with the island.

Lars, the picture shows an unusual encounter. The beautiful raptor is fastened by one leg. It is a trained specimen, its talons are impressive. Good close up, perfect sharpness.

I always enjoy seeing birds, and while this one might not be an actual "Maltese falcon" by species, it is a falcon, and it does live in Malta, so that's close enough. :-) The beak and talons are strong and sharp, and he has beautiful feathers. This is an attractive bird portrait.

Ik vind de meeste roofvogels prachtige dieren. Zo ook valken.
Mooi hoe het gevederte weergegeven werd. Prachtige rossige kleuren en het bovenste deel van de snavel en de poten zijn geel.

A beautiful bird. The + sized larger view came out very clear with great detail. It is nice to see others take advantage of the HTML codes to link to different TE locations. Not sure how long these Beta sites will last. Again though a good capture of a majestic bird.
