Photographer's Note

Belfort van Sluis

Yesterday I finally got a good opportunity to test my new camera, when I visited a part of the country I had never been before (but seen many photos of, since John (jhm) regularly showed photos from there, when he was still active here).

This photo shows the high street in the town of Sluis in the area of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen in the province of Zeeland. A fortress town, it played a role in both the Hundred Years War (Battle of Sluys, 1340) and the Eighty Years War (captured by Spanish troops in 1587, retaken by the Dutch in 1604). Seen in the background here is the Belfry of Sluis, whose construction started 1386. Most belfries are found in Flanders and Northern France, this is the only one in The Netherlands, but only a few kilometres away from the Belgian border.
