Photographer's Note
The ‘Rotterdam celebrates the city‘ festival in 2016 (Rotterdam viert de stad) celebrated 75 years of Rotterdam reconstruction after the destruction of the city centre in WW2.
‘The Stairs’ was one of the venues of the festival. At the moment of capturing it was almost completed. It temporarily connected the Station square with the roof of the Groothandelsgebouw. It was 29 meters high and 57 meters long. Ascending the stairs and strolling on the the roof offered a progression of spectacular views over the city, enabling the public to take in the massive scale of Rotterdam’s constant urban reconstruction / (re)development.
Architect Winy Maas (MRDRV): “Back in the day I would look out over Rotterdam after the film in Kriterion (then a film theatre, now convention space on top of the roof of the Groothandelsgebouw). It offered a fantastic view of the city. The roof of the Groot Handelsgebouw, one of the best buildings from the reconstruction period in the Netherlands, deserves to be used as a basis for the next re-invention of Rotterdam. With these stairs we want to offer this suggestion and celebrate at the same time. The Stairs must create more liveliness on the roof and show a second layer in the next step of urban development of Rotterdam. A second coming. It would be good to make it a permanent fixture." Alas it didn’t.
In the WS is a wider view with the aforementioned former 'Kriterion' cinema om top.

Hello Bert,
This is a photo I would have loved to take. I really like the graphical effects of the steps and the shadows and the simplicity of the colours, with the two men's orange vests as the only bright items. They are well placed on a diagonal, which gives the photo nice balance. This was taken only 8 days after I visited Rotterdam, but I have no memory of seeing these steps just outside the railway station.
Best regards,
Gert

Hallo Bert, the white stairs combined with the orange clothes create a pleasant visual effect. Two workers are cleaning the stairs. I like the shadows projected by the handrails. Fine colors, good sharpness, instructive photo note, regards.

Dag Bert,

Ooooops!

Hello Bert,
One of the rare occassion that I write my humble preference to posted pictures: The WS photo worth as main picture. It has a wider scope and shows more details and about the action on the stairs. Yet, the main picture also well made and has good motion collected.
My best regards,
Ike

Hello Bert,
They look as busy as bees!
Thank you for showing us the wider picture of the location; now we can understand where they are.
But as far as the photographs go, this is the better one; in fact it is excellent in both its composition and its details. This version pays lots of attention to the shadows, which are extending across the steps and incidentally, add a touch of humour, for it appears that these workmen are furiously trying to sweep away the shadows!
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hallo Bert,

Dag Bert,
We krijgen weinig foto's waar mensen echt werken
Hier op uw foto werken ten minste twee mensen
Dit op een mooi grafisch beeld
Goed genomen met de schaduwen.
Mooi diepte beeld ook, bedankt.
Groeten uit Vlaanderen,
John

Bonjour Philippe,

Hello, Bert!
Again there is an interesting graphism in this view of the people cleaning a building, the shadows formed by the fences look very nice! And the orange shirts of the two men stand out beautifully in the image! Very nice composition!

Smart cropping!
Regular patterns from the shadows, and the bright orange gilets.

Hello Bert,
Fantastic scene on the stairs. The guys in orange vests and the blue item form a nice triangle. Interesting shadows.
Was this only temporary construction? Stunning observation and presentation.
Have a nice week

Dag Bert,
Groet Rob
