Photographer's Note
At 78 degrees north, Longyearbyen is the most northerly town in the World. It was started in the early 1900s by an American called Longyear...there was coal in commercial quantities. Coal is still mined, but not at Longyearbyen, where all the disused coal mining equipment from before 1947 is preserved as national heritage.
