Power Of Nature, a photo from Akershus, South

Photographer's Note

This river is the border between the city of Oslo and Akershus Fylke.

The photo is taken from Lysaker in the municipality of Baerum and the buildings across the river are in Oslo. Lysakerelva (the Lysaker River) has its source in Bogstadvannet (Bogstad Water) and is around 8 kilometres long. It flows out into the Lysaker Fjord, part of the Oslo Fjord.

There is evidence that the river has been used for mills since the 12th century, and probably earlier. The old name of the river was F� (Norse Fǫ�), which means "fence" or "boundary". In the 18th century, Bogstadvannet was also known as Faavandet.

By 1660, twelve farms had claims to the hydromechanical power generated by the river.

There was a mill here too and at the other end of the bridge (in Oslo), you can see two mill stones, mounted on a vertical axis. They are rolling on a horizontal stone and grinding whatever comes between them. I don愒 know the neither the Norwegian nor the English for this kind of equipment, but in Swedish this is called a 琼ollerg幩g�. They used to be used in the paper industry, grinding wood into cellulosic fibres.

Not often we see pictures from this part of Norway here on TE. A nice view of the river, very well taken from a good angle. Interesting to see how the old buildings are surrounded by the more modern neighborhood so close. Your close view give us a good sense of the power of the river. Fine colours too. Hi Gunnar. Today's Photo I like it better because of the realistic colors. Yes, hydroelectric power has always been used. The scarcity and the price of crude oil reserves, let the people on the lookout for new resources. In your photo you can see the power of water very well.

Both shots are interesting but this is the mmore dynamic, with the water gushing relentlessly towards the viewers.
You have created a fine composition, the fence anchoring the f/g, whilst the attractive red bridge leads naturally from the f/g to the b/g. You have used a good dof.

Hello Gunnar,

A very interesting note you have given here. Firstly, to answer your question, I believe that this type of mill is called in English an Edge Mill, used for crushing rather than grinding, as in the case of grain, when the more usual twin horizonally disposed stones would be used as here. And, as you say, these "edge" mills were used for crushing wood in the paper manufacturing industry and also for making gunpowder as you can see in this page which, incidentally, also makes reference to your compatriot, Alfred Nobel.

And, funnily enough, the name of "Nobel" reminds me of this picture which I posted more than five years ago - read the note and be amused! I think I might have been quite lucky that day!!

This is a very fine photograph, again sporting your "signature" splash of red in the bridge as it spans the peaty looking waterfall of the river. The diagonal composition is pleasing and, although some of the background is just a little "messy", the dominant red distracts from it so much so that we barely notice it. Lovely vibrant colours, perfect exposure and exquisite sharpness.

Beautiful place full of industrial history. Litlle red bridge looks very nice. Brown colour of water clearly visible. Wider framing looks good in the workshop, but light was just too tricky for right exposure.

The title is apt, with the dramatic gushing water movement of the flowing stream that adds so much impact in such high velocity and i think your shutter speed is just right to show the motion without fluffy except for the small portion on the bottom right corner. The compo is fine, well detailed and diagonally adding the perspective with some nice fg and backdrop interests with good touches of vivid colors. What we are missing here is the sound! you certainly have a eye for red! The red bridge here lifts the image and offers a good focal point.There's a nice diagonal line created by the bridge support and the flow of the water.Intersting glimpse of more modern architecture in the bg.

Living in the New England region of the US means we have small mills and milltowns like this all over the place, Gunnar, so this is certainly a familiar sight for me. Your capture is excellent, really showing the power of the falls, framed well by the bright red bridge. Good to see that this and some of the mill buildings have been preserved despite the clear development in BG.

So many wonderful colors presented in this photo. Are you sure that's not a river of beer? :) The strong contrast of the yellow and red is amazing and caught my eye from the thumbnail picture. I like the many different lines created from this composition, and the textures are strong. You've managed to put quite a bit into a single image, and it works splendidly! Sharp focus as well, brilliant!

I see the huge stones of the mill on the left of the red bridge with the
