Photographer's Note
This is the story of a mural that shows up in the most unexpected place, on a barn in the middle of the Norwegian countryside.
This mural was painted in 1994 as a protest against Norwegian membership in the EU. In the role as a farmer milking a cow is former Prime Minister of Norway, Gro Harlem Brundtland. She was Prime Minister in Norway during the referendum for or against the EU in 1994. The result of the referendum the 28th of november 1994 was that Norway should not join the EU. The message in the mural is clear: The Prime Minister milks the Norwegian agriculture and giving away all the money and resources to the EU.
The first referendum with the same question was in 1972 (then EEC), and the result was the same as in 1994. Soon we have an election in Norway, the 9th of september, but this question is not a part of this years campaign. Norway is connected to the EU by the EEA agreement. Now the opposition against the EU has increased.
Anyway, the rather elaborate mural can still be seen on this barn in Vang in Valdres.
Thanks for viewing. Wish you all a nice weekend.

Hello Erling,
street art arrived also to the countryside:)The mural shows in a funny way attitude towards joining the EU-now comparing the standard of living in Norway and most of the EU countries I think it was a good idea.
Excellent composition with vivid colors, strong contrast and of course clear political message.
Wish You a nice weekend

Hej Erling,

Hello Erling - I like this display of public opinion, it's certainly eye-catching and entertaining and communicates a sentiment many in the EU would support. Excellent shot. Warm regards Rosemary

Hello Erling,
The red colour in itself makes the barn already an eye-catcher in its rural setting. The towering mural on the wall makes it also a very pretty sight although the feared scenario of course wouldn't be so pleasant.
I remember both referenda and the results. The first time I was surprised. Not anymore the second time.
People in Europe just want their country to join the EU when they believe it is better for their country and for its inhabitants. Why would Norway ever want to join the EU? It would just be a member that pays more than it enjoys any benefits. Being the only oil-rich country in the world which is also a democracy and willing to spend the income for the benefit of all its inhabitants, Norway doesn't need to join the EU or any other union. So enjoy your exceptional situation. The rest of the world can only envy it.
Best regards, have a nice weekend, Paul

Ciao Erling

Hello Erling,
This mural is a great find! The painting itself is colorful and grabs our attention, and the surrounding countryside looks so peaceful. I wonder if the neighbors in that area like this giant work of political art, or if they think it's a bit too much!

Ciao e buon fine settimana
Romano
