Photographer's Note
I’m not an ornithologist but I know a bit about animal behaviour…
And the pose we see here means “…can I have some cheese, please?”…
I like the magpies, they are such bold and smart birds, some may say cunning! They easily get used to people and it takes a lot to scare them. When challenged for territory by other and twice as large birds they will fight their ground and usually win…
I know many don’t like magpies but I think it is wrong to judge a bird by human measures. There is no evil in birds, just an instinct to survive and it is the fittest that wins!
And of course he got his cheese, check out the workshop image! This is a “he” because of the size as they are visibly larger compared to females.
I know the WS technically is a better image, but it doesn’t illustrate the little story so well…
----------
Right after I published this we got the news about the first case of bird flu in Norway, luckily not the kind dangerous for people but regretfully bad news for our feathered friends!

HI Pablo
Magpies are not found in our part of the country but I have seen them while traveling, and they are indeed very friendly.
I do like the fact that you waited for the begging pose, the bit of light on its head, makes it a very good shot.

Olá Pablo, exactely like my cats - they make funny postures and than I reward them with treats :) No doubt that 'his' pose here is a funny and expressive one. Excellent approach with good details and fine complementar WS, with the magpie "having more eyes than belly" :) - portuguese expression - don't know how's the equivalent in English.

Hi Pablo!
I love birds too, and I think your photo is just so cute and well-shot!
Now! Is the magpie saying: "May I have this piece of cheese please?", or "What cunning way can I find, to get it?". Mind you, if he is used to you feeding him, he WAS probably waiting politely!
The WS is lovely too, with 3 pieces of cheese in the beak!

Hi Pablo,
Heckle and Jeckle was a theatrical cartoon series created by Paul Terry, and released by his own studio, Terrytoons. The characters were a pair of identical magpies who calmly outwitted their foes in the manner of Bugs Bunny, while maintaining a mischievous streak reminiscent of Woody Woodpecker. However in a number of their cartoons (Moose On The Loose, Free Enterprise) their foes win in the end. Their names were inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson's famous novella Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. They are generally seen as the most entertaining and even funniest characters from the Paul Terry cartoons.
Remember these two from sat. morning TV and your fine shot brought back memories of their escapades.

Dear Pablo
Interesting this bird likes to get cheese, why not soem grain or a worm? Must be a different look when he likes something different. I have no idea about birds, only that the like to sit in trees after sunset, where there is a light attracting insects. That is the positive part, but the also bomb you when you walk below, that is the negative part. Coming back to your picture, sharpness is appropriate, colors and contrasts are fine. And your note is well written and informative Well done
Best regards
Urs
