Photographer's Note

On 10th June 1987, when I was about 15 years old, my hometown, Tarn闚, was visited by Pope John Paul II. The main purpose of his visit was the beatification of Karolina K霩ka (18981914), who was murdered by a Russian soldier. About 2 Million pilgrims arrived to witness this ceremony in the fields outside of town. I have been there of course but even though it was my hometown, we got quite terrible tickets and I was so far away I didnt see much. An altar was built for that event and on the very same spot a present-day church (in this photo) was later built. It is most probably the newest church in my hometown. Over time the fields were converted into a lovely residential area. Churches build in Poland are sponsored almost exclusively from donations of private people. My hometown, Tarn闚, and the whole diocese is the most religious region in the country.

For people who dont know, in the Catholic Church before someone is declared a saint (in the process called canonisation), the person is first declared blessed (in the process called beatification). The difference is mainly that blessed people are presented locally for the given country, while saints are advertised to the whole Catholic Church. Over time blessed may be later upgraded to saints.

This picture was taken in the evening with strong sunlight illuminating the church, which was set against the dark grey sky.
