Porto is a Portuguese town located in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, home of the namesake municipality with 41.66 km in area, with a population of 216 080 inhabitants (2008), making it the second largest city of Portugal and also the second largest city in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula after the nearby Galician city of Vigo. The city is considered a global city range and is also the capital of the District of Porto, Porto Metropolitan Area, and is still the main center of the region's statistical North. The city metropolis formed by adjacent municipalities that together form a single urban area has about 1,394,046 inhabitants. Moreover, it is the center of a large metropolitan area with about 1.7 million inhabitants and a statistical region with over 3.7 million people.

The city of Porto is known as the City Invicta. It is the city that gave its name to Portugal - very early (c. 200 BC) when it designated the Portus Cale, coming later to become the capital of the County of Portugal, or Portucale County (county which gave its name Portugal). It is also a city known worldwide for its wines, its bridges and ancient and contemporary architecture, its historical center, classified as World Heritage by UNESCO, and its football club FC Porto.
